Workshop series of the ‘Institute Heritage Studies<\/em>‘:<\/p>\n

World Heritage and cultural diversity in theory and pedagogical practice<\/h3>\n

The ‘Institute Heritage Studies<\/em>‘ of the INA at the Free University of Berlin offered, in cooperation with the Robert-Jungk-Oberschule, a free month-long lecture and workshop series with the subject \u201cWorld Heritage and cultural diversity in theory and pedagogical practice\u201d. Interested teachers, student teachers, high school students as well as others interested in World Heritage were warmly invited to take part in the event and discover more about the subject of World Heritage.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Through a combination of presentations and workshops, the moderators, together with the participants, discussed possible ways to handle the subjects of \u201ccultural diversity\u201d and \u201cWorld Heritage\u201d in schools. They took a closer look at the term \u201ccultural heritage\u201d: What does \u201ccultural heritage\u201d actually mean? What does UNESCO say about it? And what does that have to do with the classroom?<\/p>\n

Cultures are created by people, just as they can be destroyed by people. This concerns tangible and intangible culture and the arts as much as cultural institutions and everyday culture. Our culture determines who we are and how we behave. UNESCO is so important for this reason, because a conscious handling of culture can make peace and promote mutual understanding.<\/p>\n

Participants in the event series considered together how World Heritage could be prepared and taught in order to fulfil its peacemaking mission. They discussed, for example, whether it makes sense to address World Heritage in the classroom and how to use World Heritage for the sustainable development of society. The main topics of focus were the following:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Potential of World Heritage for education and for dealing with cultural diversity,
\n\u2022 Possibilities for the inclusion of World Heritage in teaching plans and programmes,
\n\u2022 Successful practices and projects related to World Heritage,
\n\u2022 Opportunities to treat the topic of World Heritage didactically.<\/p>\n

The event took place between May 20014 and January 2015.<\/p>\n
