Herrnhut inspired jewellery and glass-making

Střední uměleckoprůmyslová škola sklářská Kamenický Šenov/Secondary School of Glassmaking Kamenický Šenov (Czech Republic)

Students from the glassmaking school in Kamenický Šenov were impressed by the beauty of the heritage of Herrnhut, which they had explored for the first time as part of the project. With the aim to capture this beauty, students created jewellery featuring symbols of Herrnhut and engraved glass tiles with images that they had taken of important places in Herrnhut during their trip. As students of a glass art school, they focused on their own skills, interests and resources when developing their ideas. Their designs were inspired by the Herrnhut star, the town’s orchards and the whiteness of the church. Their impressions of Herrnhut as first-time visitors also gave the local students participating in the project a new perspective on their hometown.

How students describe their motivation and their experience in the project:

“When we were traveling to the UNESCO project, we were very excited. But Herrnhut was even more beautiful than we had all imagined. The moment we arrived, we took pictures and documented the whole trip. It was breath-taking. That’s why we were so touched by the workshops on global warming and how it affects the future of this picturesque city. The landscape in Herrnhut is as important as the town itself and its community. The days we spent in Herrnhut inspired us to [come up with] three projects: the making of glass tiles, [the making] of jewellery and [the creation of] a website, all of which reflect our stay in Herrnhut. Something informative and something beautiful like the city.”
